ogmencoder is a Perl script that uses MPlayer/Mencoder and Transcode to create an OGM (audio Vorbis) backup of your DVD, ready to be burned to a CD-R. OGG (but the usual extension for the video files is OGM) is the file format for multimedia developed by the Xiph.org Foundation. It is very similar to the common Microsoft AVI. The main difference between OGM and AVI is that the new format can store audio with the Ogg Vorbis codec. With this codec, you can decrease the bitrate of your movies (I use 64 kbps), saving space to increase the video bitrate. Ogmencoder is completely automatic. Basically, the only thing you have to do is to insert the DVD in the reader and launch the program.

This release supports the use of subtitles (directly in the video stream). It has a use strict flag, code cleanups, the ability to auto probe Vorbis quality, an APT-like user query, cleans up temporary files, and has a standard ChangeLog format.

A -flat option was added (16/9 resolution, cutting on the left and the right), along with an automatic "best resolution" calculator (calcbpp.pl in the MPlayer tools) and a -res option.

ogmencoder now uses the quality variable in encoding Ogg audio. An -inputavi option that converts AVI files into ogm files was added. An -avi option that creates an AVI file with CBR MP3 audio instead of the ogm file was added. The -hcrop and -wcrop options were reintroduced for manually cutting black bands.
