ah ha, i did once - it didn't work out but i didn't consider that the
remnants of that could be causing problems. sorry about that, weird build
environments or build state can be a hassle :0)

i thought it might be wise if i just did a clean checkout and start all over
again. once i did that, your command above worked and i was back installing
correctly.
