You should be able to manage to test the unstable branch without installing it, by appropriately setting the right environment variables (DYLD_FRAMEWORK_PATH, RUBYLIB, BRIDGE_SUPPORT_PATH, etc...). The install.rb script already does that for the 'test' task, so you can read further.
