I can't answer the other questions but as far as this one is  
concerned, Latin-1 is not a subset of unicode. ASCII is. This is the  
reason why one byte encodings are not mutually compatible. The ASCII  
part is left as is but the 8th bit is used to define the other 128  
codes, which differ according to the language they code.
