reported to have been present "at least since 5.0", so maybe should look into applying the fix also to branches using lua-5.3?
Backporting seems far from trivial, so retargeting to 3.1+

There's patch #1 for lua-5****@lua***** upstream. The bug is reported to have been present "at least since 5.0", so maybe should look into applying the fix also to branches using lua-5.3?
